The Wieliczka Salt mine is one of Europe's oldest functioning
underground facilities. Started in the early Middle Ages, the mine
attracts thousands of visitors each year. Not only is it one of
Poland's greatest attractions, but it's listed on the UNESCO List of
World Heritage Sites. Visitors descend into the mine's intricately
sculpted chambers before a memorable journey through 3 kilometers of
tunnels that span the history of not only this mine, but the entire
history of mining itself. Visitors will be awestruck by the chapels,
reliefs and freestanding sculptures carved from the salt rock walls,
in addition saline underground lakes and archaeological displays.
Note: Temperatures inside the mine are a constant +15oC ( 55 F ) year
round, so you may want to bring a jacket.
